Money Extortion from Rohingyas by Myanmar Border Guard Police in Full Swing

Myanmar Border Guard Police (BGP) or Security Police Force in different township in Arakan state have recently started to commit atrocities Rohingyas in order to extort money from them. The BGP has been going rampant for weeks and arresting people under arbitrary accusations. Following cases have taken place recently.

Case #1: Border Guard Police Arbitrarily Arrested Young Rohingya Boy in southern Maungdaw for Money

There is a Border Guard Police (BGP) station based at Ye-bun-pying (Boddil) Village of Padin village tract in southern Maungdaw. Around 10PM on 30th May 2014, Ten Police Personnel from the station arrested ‘Rahimullah (son of) Shomshu (of Age 23) from his house at the village of Kayintan (Gojjon Dia) of Padin village tract. When other people in the village came out of their homes to ask why he was arrested, the Police shot warning-shots in the air.

Around 7:00AM on 31st May 2014, he was taken to the Headquarter of BGP at Kyikan Pyin (Khawar Bil) in Maungdaw. He was tortured in the quarter. And around 4:00PM of the day, the police released him having extorted Kyat 1,000,000 from him.

Case #2: Border Guard Police Seize Rohingyas’ Fire Wood in Southern Maungdaw

On 30th May 2014, Border Guard Police (BGP) encamped at the village of Kyauk Pandu (Shitaaff) in southern Maungdaw arbitrarily confiscated 200 bundles of firewood belong to Rohingya people of the same village. One bundle of firewood is worth Kyat 1,000.

The owners of the bundles of firewood are:

1)    Mv Anwar (son of) Abu Shahmah (Age 35)

2)    Hassan (son of) Shuna Ali (Age 30)

3)    Mohammed (son of) Fedaan Ali (Age 35)

4)    Abul Hashim (son of) Shor Mulluk (Age 35)

5)    Salimullah (son of) Abul Hussein (Age 32)

6)    Aman Ullah (son of) Nazir Ahmed (Age 50)

7)    Noor Mohammed (son of) Zafar (Age 45)

The firewood has been confiscated while their labors were carrying them from forest.

The same Border Guard Police extorted

1)    Kyat 10,000 from Abul Hashim (son of) Fayas (Age 33) on 30th May 2014 for repairing house and

2)    Kyat 50,000 from Kabir Ahmed (son of) Mustakh Ahmed (of Age 27) arbitrarily accusing him of using illegal Bangladeshi mobile phones.

Case #3: Security Police Force Extort Money from Rohingyas in Rathedaung

Security Police Personnel, Kyaw Thein and Ba Sein, have been posted at Security Police Post at Zaydi-Pyin village in Rathedaung Township. They have been extorting money from Rohingya people of the same village for months under different pretexts. Following are some instances.

On 19th May 2014, at Nilambor Village of Zaydi Pyin village tract

1)    Mohammed Shariff, Kyat 60,000 under the accusation of illegally visiting to Bangladesh

2)    Fakir Ahmed, Kyat 200,000 under the accusation of illegally visiting Bangladesh

On 20th May 2014, At Zaydi Pyin village,

1)    Boshshu Mean (son of) Abu Bakkar, Kyat 60,000 for Repairing House

On 22nd May 2014, At Zaydi Pyin village

1)    Mv Zahid Hussain (son of) Abdu Salam, Kyat 50,000 under the accusation of illegal affairs with a woman

2)    Abdu Salam (son of) Jalal Ahmed, Kyat 1,400,000 under the accusation of having connection with *RSO

3)    Mv Ataullah (son of) Noor Salam, Kyat 60,000 under the accusation of illegally visiting Bangladesh

American Buddhists Promote 969 Movement With Website

Irrawaddy News: July 9, 2013 A group of American Buddhists has launched an English-language website promoting the 969 movement, in response to negative media surrounding the ultra-nationalist Buddhist campaign in Burma. The website aims to dispel “myths” about the movement, with a letter from nationalist monk Wirathu to a Time magazine reporter whose article about 969 was banned in Burma.  “We’re not officially endorsed by Ven Wirathu at this time but will send a delegation to his monastery soon,” a spokesperson for the site said via email, adding that the group would create a nonprofit to coordinate “969 activities worldwide in response to religious oppression.”

Rohingya Activist Nominated for Human Rights Award

PHR congratulates Zaw Min Htut, a Burmese Rohingya activist, on his nomination for the 2011  US State Department Human Rights Defenders Award . Zaw Min Htut has been working for Rohingyas’ rights through the Burmese Rohingya Association of Japan since he fled Burma in 1998. Prior to that he was a student activist in Burma, and was detained for his participation in protests in 1996. In Japan, Zaw Min Htut has organized protests at the Burmese embassy and has written books on the history of Rohingya.
