The Stateless Rohingya Blog

The Rohingya community, originally from Burma, were resettled in Carlow in June 2009 as part of the UNHCR (United Nations high commissioner for refugees) resettlement programme. The community lived in refugee camps in Bangladesh from the early 1991’s.  The Rohingyas number approximately 1.5 million and have endured continued persecution and ethnic cleansing in Burma. About 1.5 million Rohingyas have been living in exile in many countries all over the world. The Rohingyas in Burma continue to suffer from several forms of persecution and human rights violations. 25 Rohingya men and women, over a period of 6 weeks, took part in an art project focusing primarily on their culture and their journey to Ireland. County Carlow  football club scoops Ireland diversity award 2011 On the 14th of December 2011 in the surroundings of the Mercantile Hotel on Dame Street, Dublin the Carlow County Football Club, better known as Carlow Rugby Club won a 2011 Diverse Ireland Award from the Integration Center. This national award honours those who have made positive advancements around immigrant integration in Ireland in ten different categories and the Carlow Rugby Club won their award in the sporting organisation category in recognition of their key role as host to a very innovative and inclusive integration initiative that saw the re-establishment of one of Ireland’s oldest cricket clubs at the behest of Carlow’s newest residents – the Rohingya Community.
