Most of the Rohingya Muslim detainees have been arbitrarily arrested and in the detention without any charges and prosecutions since the violence in June 2012. “In earlier years, we were to send donated foods and meals twice daily to the Muslim detainees in Maungdaw Police Detention during Muslim Fasting Month Ramadhan. However, on June 30, deputy chief of Maungdaw Police Station, Lieutenant Myint Lwin, said that they won’t allow the detained Rohingya Muslims to receive food from outside in this year’s fasting month. The police officer said ‘no need to feed anything to them. All are criminals. If a detainee escapes meanwhile you provide them food, who will bear the responsibility for that.’ ...

Maungdaw,  Arakan State:  The essential commodities, mainly those which are used in preparation of iftar (fasting breaking) items are being sold at high prices in Maungdaw just from the beginning of the holy Ramadan (fasting month) which started on June 30, said Khala, a trader from Maundaw Town.  One of our correspondents said that the holy month of Ramadan began in Maungdaw with the hike in the prices of Iftar items. Sham Shu, a customer also said that the traders decrease the supply to sell it for high profit during Ramadan. Traders attributed the price rise to low supply and high demand of vegetables in the local markets. A poor villager named Kurshid said that Ramadan is for the rich, as prices of essentials go beyond their purchasing capacity. Fayas KPN News: July 13, 2013 Since July 11, 2013 Muslims around the world has been celebrating the holy month of Ramadan in the world. But, in Arakan State, Rohingya Muslim is passing Ramadan month with acute difficulties.  One year has passed since the last violence in Arakan State but until now the situation has not change. But, persecution against the Rohingya people is still going on. Yesterday, about one hundred Nasaka personnel went to the Wabeg village of Nasaka Headquarters of Kawarbill of Maungdaw north, and forced villagers to sign a document to confess that they are “Bengali” instead of “Rohingya.” Regarding this, villagers strongly opposed to the Nasaka and fled from their village not to give signatures or finger prints to a document.  But, Nasaka personnel arrested some of the villagers including men and women and forcibly taken away their signatures and finger prints.
