Burmese envoy meets PM Sheikh Hasina

Burmese Ambassador to Bangladesh Myo Myint Than called on Hasina at her office and informed her of the latest situation in Arakan state, said PM’s Press Secretary Abul Kalam Azad. The Burmese government has set up a high-powered investigation commission to probe into the recent sectarian clash in Arakan state, The Burmese envoy told Prime Minister yesterday.

HRW finds Bangladesh's Rohingya policy ‘cruel’; urges govt to open borders

Dhaka, Aug 23 (UNB) - New York-based Human Rights Watch (HRW) has slammed the government for its restrictions on humanitarian aid to Rohingya Muslim refugees fleeing persecution and violence in neighbouring Myanmar. “The government of Bangladesh should immediately cease its punitive restrictions on international organisations providing lifesaving humanitarian aid to the more than 200,000 Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh,” the HRW said on Wednesday, urging the government to open borders to Rohingya refugees.

Soldiers loot Rohingya shop in Maungdaw north

Maungdaw, Arakan State:  Around 40 soldiers from Light Infantry Battalion [LIB] 342 landed in Thee Chaung [Balukhali] village market, north of Maungdaw, at around 2.30 pm on August 22 and looted a  shop  in front of many shoppers and other witnesses, a local village administration officer reported.

Statement from the Bangkok Conference on the Rohingyas of Myanmar

Dr. Habib Siddiqui Myanmar (formerly Burma) is going through a deep crisis in dealing with ethnic conflicts, especially in its western Rakhine (formerly Arakan) state. To find probable solutions to the existing problems, Arakan Rohingya Organization - Japan (JARO) and Rohingya National Organization in Thailand (RNOT) jointly sponsored an International Rohingya Conference in Bangkok, Thailand. The theme of the conference was “Contemplating Burma’s Rohingya People’s Future in Reconciliation and (Democratic) Reform.” 

Bangladesh should open borders to Rohingyas: HRW

The government of Bangladesh should immediately remove its restrictions on international organizations providing life saving humanitarian aid to the more than 200,000 Rohingya Muslims in Bangladesh, Human Rights Watch said on Thursday. In addition, it should open its borders to Rohingyas seeking to flee Rakhine State, it said.
