Burma: Satellite Images Detail Destruction in Meiktila

Decisive government action to combat impunity, end discrimination, and promote tolerance among religious groups is needed to end the tide of attacks against Muslim communities. An estimated 40 people were killed and 61 wounded in the clashes between Muslims and majority Buddhists in Meiktila in the Mandalay Region. Satellite images analysed by Human Rights Watch show the scale of the destruction: an estimated 828 buildings, the vast majority residences, were totally destroyed and at least 35 other buildings were partially destroyed. 42 Rohingyas pushed back

  Rohingya Muslims from Myanmar are kept under watch by Bangladeshi security officials in Teknaf on June 18, 2012. Teknaf, Bangladesh: Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) arrested 42-Rohingya from different points of Burma-Bangladesh border and pushed back to Burma on March 29, according to BGB official.  “42 Rohingyas were arrested from Burma-Bangladesh border points by BGB after being conducted operation while they were crossing border secretly.” Among the arrestees, 24 males, 10 women including 8 children, they were arrested from the various points of border —Taungbro, Gumdum, Balukhali, Palongkhali– under the Cox’s Bazar district, according to an aide of BGB. The arrestees are from Maungdaw and Buthidaung Townships of Arakan State, Burma. They crossed the border to take shelter in Bangladesh after crossing the Naff River because of acute of human rights violation against them in Arakan State.
