The Rohingya and the denial of the ‘right to have rights’

(Reuters) By now the story has been told countless times in the wake of the recent rioting in western Burma where tensions between the areas’ Rohingyas and Arakanese communities boiled over last month.  People were killed, houses destroyed, thousands were displaced and boatloads of Rohingyas crossing into Bangladesh were turned away.

BRAT Letter to UN Secretary : Urgent Appeal to End the Humanitarian Crisis in Arakan State, Burma

By BRAT, Burmese Rohingya  community-BRAT in Thailand approached at UN Office and British Embassy yesterday. Three of BRAT memember delegation  had an hour of meeting with high officials of UN and  45 minutes  with Political Secretary of UK Embassy.       On behalf of Rohingya crisis in Arakan, BRAT handed over  a letter to UN Office and British Embassy.

25 more Rohingyas sent back

Bangladesh border and coastguards have sent back 25 Rohingyas who had intruded into Bangladesh territory in Teknaf at different times between Tuesday night and yesterday morning. Lt Col Zahid Hasan, commanding officer of BGB-42 battalion, told The Daily Star they detained 12 Rohingyas, including five women and five children, from Shah Pori jetty area around 3:00am.

Mass Arrests of Rohingya Taking Place (BROUK Press Release)

BROUK has received information from sources from Arakan that police and security forces are continuing to make mass arrests in Burma, and that Rohingya people are being tortured and killed in the process of these arrests. Last night a joint force of police, Lun-Htin (Security Forces), Sa-Ra-Pha (State Affairs Security), and military forces raided Maung Nir Village and ward 2 of Maungdaw Daw.  They tightly encircled the entire village and the combined forces entered every house in search of Rohingya Muslims. During the raid the joint forces arrested at least 100 Rohingya’s. 3 Rohingya’s are reported killed and 8 wounded while they were tried to escape. The dead bodies and wounded people were taken away with the security forces trucks.  We still do not know where the people were taken.

Authority again arrest Rohingya community in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The authorities –Police, Hluntin, Nasaka and army- are again starting arrest Rohingya community in Maungdaw today, according to an elder from Maung Ni village. “8 trucks and 10 motorbikes entered Maung Ni village today early morning at about 5:30am and the troops rounded up the village and the authority started arresting villagers where they searched mostly young Rohingyas.”

Refugee repatriation uncertain

Dhaka: Repatriation of refugees to Burma is uncertain though Burma has agreed in principles to take back refugees from Bangladesh, said observers. Burma has agreed in principles to take back its Muslim refugees in Bangladesh in the deputy foreign minister-level meeting of the two countries, which was held from 1st to 2nd July. The Burmese delegation are said to have told their Bangladeshi counterparts in the meeting that the refugees who provide sufficient evidence they are Burmese citizens would be accepted for repatriation according to the agreement.

Myanmar opposition take historic step into parliament

NAYPYIDAW:  Myanmar 's opposition lawmakers are due to take their seats in the nation's fledgling parliament on Wednesday, in a session likely to be dominated by recent deadly communal unrest. After years muffled by the repressive former junta, National League for Democracy (NLD) members will attend the new parliament session , with violence in western Rakhine state, economic reform and foreign investment leading the agenda.

The Equal Rights Trust (ERT) Launches Situation Report on Rohingya Crisis in Myanmar and Bangladesh

London, 02 July 2012 The Equal Rights Trust (ERT) today launches its situation report Burning Homes, Sinking Lives: A situation report on violence against stateless Rohingya in Myanmar and their refoulement from Bangladesh. The report presents the findings and observations of ERT researchers.
