Burma Could Be Next Asian Tiger: UN Adviser

(Photo: UN) UNITED NATIONS—The UN secretary-general’s special adviser on Burma says the resource-rich but desperately poor nation has the potential to become an Asian tiger if it promotes investment, eases financial restrictions and finds experts to develop the country.

Temporary lifting of Burma sanctions welcomed

Christian Solidarity Worldwide has welcomed the European Union’s decision to suspend sanctions against Burma for a year. The EU’s Foreign Affairs Council moved to temporarily suspend economic sanctions against the country in light of recent reforms, including the release of political prisoners and a historic by-election which saw a landslide victory by the pro-democracy party of Aung San Suu Kyi.

Pyidaungsu Hluttaw session continues for 27th day Messages put on record, reports discussed

NAY PYI TAW, 24 April— The third regular sessions of the first Pyidaungsu Hluttaw continued for the 27th day at Pyidaungsu Hluttaw Hall of the Hluttaw Building at 10.15 am today. The session was attended by Speaker of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw U Khin Aung Myint, Speaker of Pyithu Hluttaw Thura U Shwe Mann and 597 representatives of Pyidaungsu Hluttaw. During the session, messages were put on record and reports were read out and clarified.

Canada removes most sanctions on Burma

( Mizzima ) – Canada has joined other western nations and the E.U. in lifting sanctions against Burma, saying the country has “changed course in a major way.” Foreign Affairs Minister John Baird said effectively immediately, “Prohibitions on imports, exports and investment have for the most part been removed,” as well as individual sanctions.
