One Year on From Meiktila Violence – Hate Speech Unchallenged – Prejudice To Become Law

People arrive at a stadium, a safe place for Muslims amid riots in Meikhtila March 22, 2013. REUTERS/Soe Zeya Tun   By BAI March 27, 2014 Statement by Members of the European Burma Network A year on from anti-Muslim violence in Meiktila, members of the European Burma Network express their deep concern that not only does hate-speech remain largely unchallenged within Burma, but prejudicial laws proposed by those promoting hatred against Muslims have been endorsed by the President, and are likely to become law. Those displaced by anti-Muslim violence in Meiktila remain in camps, unable to return home. The failure to tackle anti-Muslim prejudice means it is unlikely they would safely be able to return even if homes were rebuilt. Proposed laws currently being drafted by Thein Sein’s government at the request of Parliamentary Speaker Shwe Mann include a law restricting the ability of non-Buddhists to marry Buddhists, and a law expected to restrict the numbe...

European Union Must Support International Investigation Into Human Rights Abuses Against Rohingya

Statement From Members Of The European Burma Network February 03, 2014 Members of the European Burma Network express their deep concern at reports of further massacres of members of the Rohingya ethnic group in Burma. The report by the United Nations that at least 48 Rohingya men women and children have been killed, and that police were involved, provides yet more evidence that the current approach by both the government of Burma and the European Union to address ongoing abuses against the Rohingya is failing. Members of the European Burma Network are concerned by the muted response of the European Union to the latest reported massacre. We are also concerned about reports of rape and mass arrests. No action has been taken by the government of Burma or the European Union in response to continuing and consistent reports of the use of rape in Rakhine State since the latest wave of violence began in 2012. The United Nations confirmed the deaths of 68 Rohingya in jail followi...

BROUK and ARNO Joint Statement on Aung San Suu Kyi’s outrageous remarks on Muslims

Joint Statement on Aung San Suu Kyi’s outrageous remarks on Muslims   October 26, 2013 Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) and Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) strongly condemn Burmese opposition leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi for her outrageous comments on Muslims in an interview with BBC on Thursday, 24 October 2013. Her remarks on Burma’s peaceful living Muslim minority communities are full of prejudice based on fanatical patriotism and islamophobia. In a situation of injustice, ethnic cleansing and genocide against Rohingya and other Muslims in Burma, she tried to defend Buddhist extremism saying that Buddhists in Burma are terrified by “global Muslim power” where there is no such threat from Burma’s numerically very small and insignificant Muslim population. This is a pretext or a fictitious reason, where Burma is a predominantly Buddhist country, particularly when the Rohingya are rendered stateless with no basic freedoms, in order to conceal t...

Prime Minister David Cameron Should Press President Thein Sein to Stop Rohingya Ethnic Cleansing

DateJuly 14, 2013 Joint Statement: by Arakan Rohingya National Organisation (ARNO) and Burmese Rohingya Organisation UK (BROUK) After decades of persecution, state sponsored deadly violence against the Rohingya and Kaman Muslims was carried out in Arakan in June and October 2012 that resulted in the killing of many thousands people, massive rape and large scale destruction of villages, homes and properties  and displacement of about 150,000 Muslims. In addition the evidences of mass grave have been uncovered by the creditable human rights groups. Although more than one year has passed from June 2012, still there is no improvement in the human rights situation of Rohingya people. There is no change of attitude of the Burmese government and Rakhine Buddhists towards them. No action has yet been taken against the perpetrators. On the contrary, silence extermination of Rohingyas has been increasingly carried out forcing them to live in squalid living conditions in overcrowded ...
