Authority orders to destroy mosque and houses in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State : The concerned authority ordered to destroy a mosque accompanied by 14 other houses in Maungdaw south on May 24, according to our correspondent. On that day, at about 12 noon, U Than Htun, an officer of Maungdaw Township administration office (Mayaka) summoned the Khonza bill village Administration officer— Sayed Alam and other village elders to Aley Than Kyaw police station and ordered to destroy a mosque and 14 houses because of renovation. “The officer also said that the order came from high level office”, said one of the participants on condition of anonymity. The authority also targets religious buildings. Though the Burma claim itself as religious freedom country, but not for Rohingya community, said a Rohingya youth Jalil from the Maungdaw south. Besides, on 26th May 2014, Maungdaw police arrested Rohingya woman possibly in relation to fire that broke out at her house in the village on 10th March 2014. “More than 100 Rohingya homes were burnt down by Rakhine extremists in northern Maungdaw between 9th March 2014 and 20th March 2012. US Senate urges Myanmar to end Rohingya persecution

By Dawn May 26, 2014 WASHINGTON : The US Senate Foreign Relations Committee has urged the Burmese government to take immediate steps to end the persecution of Rohingya Muslims. In a letter to Myanmar’s President Thein Sein, the committee’s chairman Robert Menendez expressed deep concern over the worsening humanitarian crisis affecting Rohingyas. “I urgently request that your government take immediate steps to end the persecution of the Rohingya, ensure the security of international aid groups and facilitate their immediate access to Rakhine state,” he wrote. The committee noted that recently the United States and Myanmar had made progress in building ties and cooperation between the two countries, yet several critical human rights and humanitarian concerns threatened to impede further progress, with the situation in Rakhine State and Buddhist-Muslim communal violence highest among them.
