Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar: A delegation of high-level UNHCR officers visited the Burmese Rohingya refugee camp – Nayapara - on September 3, said refugee committee Chairman Islam from Nayapara camp.
“The delegation included--- Stina Ljungdel, newly appointed country representative of the UN High Commissioner for refugees (UNHCR), Salah Uddin, the deputy secretary of Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commission (RRRC) and other Bangladeshi officials paid visit the Nayapara refugee camp.”
According to refugees, the group reached at Nayapara camp at about 10:30 am and toured a women’s tailoring center, water reservoir, schools, sheds of the camp and etc.
Afterwards, the country representative held a meeting with the members of camp committee regarding the issues of the refugees at the office of Camp Management Committee (CMC).
During the meeting, the CMC Chairman Islam and Mohamed Jubair, the secretary of (CMC) urged the delegation to repair refugees’ sheds, to build road inside the camp and to increase more medical facilities in Nayapara camp.
The members of the committee also urged for durable solution as the refugees have been living in the camp for 22 years.
The World communities are well aware of the Rohingya issue and the UNHCR is trying to draw attention for durable solution, she said in the meeting.
When the newly appointed country representative Ms Stina presented her credentials to the Foreign Ministry on August 29, the Foreign Minister Dipu Moni said the following points to her ( Ms Stina), according to a press release.
The Foreign Minister highlighted that a durable solution for Rohingya refugees, undocumented refugee and Burmese nationals from Burma lay in their voluntary repatriation to Myanmar (Burma) and establishment of their rights in their motherland.
The government has also introduced free education, up to class VI, vocational skill training, computer training, and primary and secondary healthcare to prepare the Rohingyas for a productive life when they voluntarily return to their homeland, Dipu Moni said.
Ms Stina thanked to Bangladesh government for hosting a large number of these international refugees for the last 30 years with a highly satisfactory protection regime compared to many places in the world.
She highlighted that Bangladesh’s good work and best practices in hosting the refugees from Myanmar quite often go unappreciated when Bangladesh should receive commendations for maintaining peaceful refugee camps and voluntary repatriation of most of them before 2005.
However, the delegation left the Nayapara camp at about 12: 30 pm, sources said.
