Maungdaw, Arakan State: The
Buthidaung jail authority had shifted Rohingya prisoners to different places –
police custodies – of Maungdaw and Buthidaung today, according to an official
who didn’t want to mention his name.
“The jail authority had ordered from high officials to shift Rohingya prisoners
who are educated, smart persons and can able to complain about human rights
violations to the United Nations Special Rapporteur Tomás Ojea Quintana who
will visit Arakan (Rakhine) State, Kachin State, Shan State, Chin State
and Meikhtila in Mandalay Region of Burma during August 11 -21.”
The Burmese
government is trying to hide the violations on Rohingya community and try to
hide 32 Rohingya prisoners from jail to Maungdaw police custody and 30 Rohingya
prisoners to Buthidaung police custody today where the custodies are full of
detainees, said a Rohingya elder from Maungdaw.
“In
Buthidaung jail, more than 1000 Rohingya prisoners who were sentenced without
trail since June 2012 on false allegation of involving in the riot. Some were
died in the jail for torturing and the family menders still didn’t know where
the dead body was kept or buried.”
But, “The
Government’s agreement to provide me with such wide-ranging access to different
parts of the country will give me an excellent opportunity to assess how the
human rights situation is evolving as the reform agenda moves forward,” noted
the rights expert, who visits Myanmar at the invitation of the Government,
according to UNOG website.
“In Rakhine
State, I will be looking at the steps being taken to implement the President’s
vision of developing a harmonious, multi-cultural society in Myanmar, which
respects and protects the human rights of all. This will include measures to
ensure that the perpetrators of human rights violations, including state
officials, are held to account,” Mr. Ojea Quintana said. “I will also be
looking for progress in addressing the long-standing discrimination against the
Rohingya community there.”
During his
eleven-day visit to Myanmar, the United Nations Special Rapporteur intends to
visit the remaining prisoners of conscience and the detained INGO humanitarian
staff, the website also mentioned.
