Tun Aung, a 65-year-old medical doctor from Maungdaw, Arakan State, has had his prison sentence extended by six years, Burma Campaign UK reports. A leader of the local Rohingya community, he was originally sentenced to 11 years in prison on charges related to his alleged involvement in last year’s clashes between Rohingyas and ethnic Arakanese. According to Burma Campaign UK, his prison term was increased despite calls for his release by British Foreign Office Minister Hugo Swire. The sentence was lengthened after the prosecution argued in an appeal that his original sentence was too lenient.
