Phuket Property Raided, 84 Illegal Burmese Workers Arrested

PHUKET: Crime Suppression Division police raided a Phuket construction site at 5.30pm yesterday and arrested 84 Burmese workers with no documents.

The arrests took place at the Phanason Grand View Bang Jo at Thalang, in central Phuket, where police also reported finding an unregistered - and therefore non-tax paying - backhoe. 

 Construction was about 30 percent complete at the site, police said. 

The arrested workers were taken first to Thalang Police Station to be charged then to Immigration Headquarters in Phuket City.

They are likely to serve short sentences for working in Thailand illegally before being deported to Burma.

Cease restrictions on aid to Rohingyas: HRW tells Dhaka

  Human Rights Watch (HRW) urged Bangladesh government to immediately cease its restrictions on international organisations providing aid to more than 200,000 Muslim Rohingyas in the country. It also called on the government to open its borders to Rohingyas fleeing sectarian violence and abuses by Myanmarese security forces in Arakan State in western Myanmar, said a press release of New York-based Human Rights Watch published on Wednesday.

Dr. Habib Siddiqui Myanmar (formerly Burma) is going through a deep crisis in dealing with ethnic conflicts, especially in its western Rakhine (formerly Arakan) state. To find probable solutions to the existing problems, Arakan Rohingya Organization - Japan (JARO) and Rohingya National Organization in Thailand (RNOT) jointly sponsored an International Rohingya Conference in Bangkok, Thailand.
