Village Admin threatens to de-list 34- family in next census collectionin Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: Village Administration officer U Maung Maung (Rakhine community) is trying to de-list 34-family member of Hati Para (Lone Don) village of Maungdaw north from next census collection by Nasaka, said a local elder preferring not to be named.

“The said Village Admin with the help of Burma’s border security force of Nasaka area No.5 arrested 13 villagers from Lone Don village over the accusation that they had involved in the clashes between Rakhines and Rohingyas on June 8, 2012,. Of them two were killed, three went into hiding after fleeing from the Nasaka and the rest 8 villagers have been detained in the Nasaka camp.”

In addition, another 64 villagers de-listed from the family lists by the Nasaka with the help of Village Administration officer U Maung Maung on July 5, 2012, over allegation that they had also involved in June clashes at Maungdaw, said another villager.

However, the Village Admin is not satisfied with this harassment, and is also trying to de-list another 34 villagers from next census collection by Nasaka from the Lone Don village with the cooperation of Nasaka over the allegation that they had involved in the clashes of June 2012, the villager also added.

On July 8, 2012, at around 9:00 am, the police Sergeant U Kyaw Than, village Administration officer U Maung Maung with the cooperation of Military Intelligence ( Sarapa) created problem in Lone Don village and destroyed three shops and seven houses of Rohingyas. They created problem in the village to arbitrary arrest and to extort money from the villagers. They have no restriction to arrest the Rohingya villagers regarding the clashes which was occurred only on Maungdaw town. But the concerned authorities such as —police, Hluntin, Nasaka, Sarapa and army arrested villagers from rural areas, according to a local businessman from the locality.

At present, in Nasaka area No.5 of Maungdaw Township, all the government primary schools, Madrasas (Arabic schools), and mosques are closed by the authority, said a religious leader on condition of anonymity.

Besides, village sentry man named Alizuhar (23), son of Moktar, hailed from Zedi Pyin village of Nasaka area No.5 was severely tortured by the Nasaka recently for nothing while he was on duty of village sentry. This is done to mostly poor people because to flee the country, said a local trader.

Moreover, the police Sergeant U Kyaw Win, the in-charge of Bawli Bazar police station arrested many villagers from the market illegally and were released after taking Kyat 30,000 to 50,000 per head who went to Bawli Bazar market for buying necessary things, said a market goer.

Despite the fact that, decades of discriminatory policy of Burmese government, deprivation of basic human rights and hopelessness of the situation has been driven thousands of Rohingya minority to an exodus of refugees seeking shelter across the neighboring countries to save their lives, said a politician.
