The 2012 Chambers Ireland Excellence in Local Government Awards were held last night in The Burlington Hotel, Dublin. Now in their ninth year, the awards showcase best practice in local government and highlight some of the great projects that local authorities are undertaking. The Awards are judged by a panel of expert judges working in the field of Local Government.
Carlow Local Authorities had three projects shortlisted - an achievement in itself. Carlow County Museum , Ireland's newest museum, was nominated for the Supporting Tourism Award and the Tone Zone Outdoor Physical Activity project was shortlisted in the Sports Development category.
Biggest cheer of the night was for Carlow's Rohingya Resettlement Project, The national winner in the County Development Board of the Year Award.
A most daunting initiative, begun in 2009, saw 13 families of Rohynga refugees from Myanmar, who had lived in camps in Bangladesh under the protection of the UNHCR resettled in Carlow. An intensive support programme was put in place and ensured the successful integration of the families into the local Community. The Award is a tribute to the ongoing efforts of the volunteer support group and Carlow Local Authorities.
The range of projects highlighted the excellent work being carried out by Local Authorities all over the country.
In spite of tighter budgetary constraints and the wider economic challenges, nominations showed the flexibility and levels of innovation being displayed by Authorities and staff all over the country.
