THE brief news item “NGO slams UN over Rohingya massacre” caught my attention.
The initiative taken by the human rights group (MERHROM) condemning the recent violence against the Rohingya ethnic minority in Myanmar is timely, justified and appropriate.
The NGO has called for immediate action by the United Nations to end the clashes in Myanmar that has reportedy resulted in the deaths of hundreds of Rohingyas.
The UN should respond positively to the call for the deployment of peace keeping forces and observe.
By right the UN should go a step further to ensure that a lasting peace accord is initiated and achieved so as to bring an end to this senseless killing of the minority community in Myanmar.
