The Rohingya Muslims of Myanmar are suffering centuries of abuse, with Britain complicit in the crime, a prominent political analyst tells Press TV
More than 100 Rohingya Muslims have recently been killed in a recent wave of sectarian violence in Myanmar’s western state of Rakhine.
Myanmar army forces allegedly provided the Buddhists with containers of petrol to set ablaze the houses of Muslim villagers and force them out of their houses.
Press TV has conducted an interview with Dr. Randy Short, a member of Dignity, Human Rights and Peace Organization, from Washington, to further discuss the issue. The following is a rough transcription of the interview.
Press TV: Hundreds of Muslims have been killed recently in the past few days. The world is silent; this despite the fact that Aung San Suu Kyi has been awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Similarly, these two don’t mix. There’s no peace and people are being killed on a daily basis.
Short: It doesn’t make sense. But imagine President Obama has started wars in other countries. He has a peace prize. Henry Kissinger has the peace prize. F.W. de Klerk from South Africa, a mastermind of killing blacks, has a peace prize. So, the Nobel committee really knows how to pick them.
In the case of this minority, the Rohingya group, they are the victims of several centuries of abuse.
It’s analogous to what happened in Sri Lanka with the Tamils who were brought to Sri Lanka by the British to work in their plantations. When the British removed themselves in terms of being in charge of those societies, these minorities that were replacement populations, even though there were Tamils before the British brought more over, these folks became targeted by the nationalist movements to get rid of colonialism.
So, you’ll hear silence from the West because the British are complicit. They’re the ones that gave independence to Burma. They knew all this stuff was going on.
Even Aung San Suu Kyi, the woman in Burma with the Nobel Peace Prize, her father was an intolerant nationalist leader who worked with the Japanese against the British.
So, there’s a long history of treachery and strange behavior. There’s also this fake concept that Buddhists are necessarily peaceful and fair. All people have problems. All religions have persons that often don’t meet the highest idea of the religion that they profess to be a part of.
Press TV: Again, these kinds of stories don’t get covered by Western media despite claims of covering world stories. How do people in the West, especially where you are in the United States, get a chance to be informed of these stories?
Short: I can’t speak for them. I watch Press TV, and rarely Al-Jazeera.
You have to understand that American media is narcissistic. They’re into naval gazing, stars, pornography and celebrities; not the real issues.
If the American public were given real news, you’d have a far more dynamic society. So, the American public is fed a steady diet of sports and ignorant celebrities and drug addicted singers, starlets, instead of the real news of what’s happening in the world.
