OIC organizing donors meeting for Burma’s Rakhine State

The Organisation of Islamic Co-operation (OIC ) and Qatar Charity are organizing a meeting with about 30 regional and international organisations to coordinate humanitarian services to Rakhine State in Burma, the Gulf Times reported on Wednesday.
The event follows the first consultative meeting held in Kuala Lumpur earlier last month.
Ambassador Atta al-Mannan Bakhait, the assistant secretary general for Humanitarian Affairs at OIC, said in a press statement that the Doha meeting would be the first of its kind in the Arab region since such organisations have not met under one umbrella to discuss “the gravely deteriorating situation” in Burma.
The coordinated joint action between all the concerned organisations working in the rescue operation in Burma, whether Islamic or international, would further boost the support needed for the Rohingya Muslims, officials said.
The OIC and nongovernmental organisations provided recommendations related to the situation in Burma after they held a meeting in Kuala Lumpur.
The group called for the creation of a special fund for reconstruction and rehabilitation in the region of Arakan under the auspices of the OIC, and an international media campaign, including social media, to share information about the protracted violence in Burma and humanitarian consequences for the minority groups in the country.
It said that some 69,000 people in Burma have been displaced by recent clashes in Rakhine State, according to the UN Refugee Agency (UNHCR).
About 46 per cent of the displaced people are children.
Some who have fled the recent violence in western Burma that began in June have crossed over into neighbouring Bangladesh. Muslims in Bangladesh launch a series of attacks on more than a dozen Buddhist temples along the border area this past week, as community tensions in the area flared up.

Irrawaddy News: July 9, 2013 A group of American Buddhists has launched an English-language website promoting the 969 movement, in response to negative media surrounding the ultra-nationalist Buddhist campaign in Burma. The website aims to dispel “myths” about the movement, with a letter from nationalist monk Wirathu to a Time magazine reporter whose article about 969 was banned in Burma.  “We’re not officially endorsed by Ven Wirathu at this time but will send a delegation to his monastery soon,” a spokesperson for the site said via email, adding that the group would create a nonprofit to coordinate “969 activities worldwide in response to religious oppression.”
