Chittagong, Bangladesh: Burmese government and the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) had signed an agreement to create an office for the provision of humanitarian aid in Rangoon, Burma, according to OIC spokesperson Ambassador Tariq Bakheet which publish in OIC newsletter number 37.
The fact-finding mission dispatched by the Secretary-General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu to Burma signed the agreement the day before, noting that “this is a positive development which we appreciate and welcome,” according to Ambassador Tariq at a press conference held on September 12, 2012 at the Headquarters of the General Secretariat in Jeddah.
“The developments come within the continued actions by the OIC to take practical measures in implementing the resolutions of the Summit held in Makkah last August.”
The delegation is continuing its mission in Burma and has met with several government officials, including the Foreign Minister, the Minister of Border Affairs, Social Welfare Minister and Interior Minister, and has conducted field visits to sites for the displaced.
A fact-finding mission from the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) travelled to Myanmar (Burma) on 5 September 2012, for ten days to investigate into the recent violence against Rohingya Muslims in the Rakhine region and the repression and human rights violations.
The mission will visit the capital Naypyidaw to meet government officials and from there it will visit villages in Rakhine (formerly Arakan) affected by the violence including Buthidaung, Maungdaw and Akyab.
The fact-finding mission will also set up the visit by the OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu, which will follow soon, according to OIC newsletter number 36.
In a speech to OIC senior officials Sunday, Ihsanoglu said the group condemned the “heinous behavior” of the Burmese government against the Rohingya, OIC Secretary General Ekmeleddin Ihsanoglu said on September 9 to OIC senior officials in his speech, according to http://www.saudigazette.com.sa website.
The treatment includes “the displacement and expulsion, the killing of hundreds among them in the last few years,” the website stated.
