LONDON: A high powered delegation of British Muslims called on the ambassador of Myanmar in London to urge an end to the discrimination and sufferings of Rohingya Muslims.

The delegation consisted of Lord Nazir Ahmed, Yasmin Qureshi, MP, Ansar Burney, Suasi Leghari of Islamic Human Rights organisation and a leading member of the Rohingya Muslim community.

They met the ambassador for half an hour and informed him about the concerns of Muslims worldwide over reports of massacre of Rohingya Muslims. They asked the ambassador to pass on their concern to the government back home and demanded an immediate end to the horrific crimes being committed against the Muslims.

On this occasion, the issue of Ansar Burney’s visa refusal to Burma was raised and the ambassador assured Burney that he will be issued the visa if he re-applies.

Speaking to media, the delegation leaders said that the government of Myanmar is as much responsible as the Buddhist Rakhine for the crimes against Muslims. They said the tide in Rohingya’s Arakan state in Burma has changed for the worse for Rohingya.

“The massive killings of Rohingya by Buddhist Rakhine backed by Burmese/Rakhine forces on the streets in broad daylight have somewhat subsided in some cities, but now the brutal killings have gone underground. Currently, the Burmese forces (police, Lon Htein, and Nasaka forces) are arresting thousands of Rohingya male adults and taking them to unknown destinations.

Women have become easy target for rape as there are no men left in those families. Hundreds of rape cases, often in front of the family members, have been reported. Young girls have also been taken away by Burmese forces.

There are disturbing reports of mass killings of the innocent Rohingya detainees and the bodies disposed in the woods and rugged terrains.”The ambassador told the delegation that these reports were exaggerated and there was no truth in them. He promised to hold an investigation into these reports and assured the delegation that Muslims will not be maltreated.
