Chittagong, Aug 1 (bdnews24.com) – Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) on Tuesday night arrested 25 Rohingyas from Shahparir Dwip of Teknaf upazila in Cox's Bazar district.
Lieutenant Colonel Zahid Hassan, local commanding officer of the BGB, told bdnews24.com that they detained the Rohingyas after they had crossed the River Naf and entered into Bangladesh territory through Shahparir Dwip points and its adjacent river in Teknaf.
Four of the detainees who had fled sectarian violence in Myanmar were sent back through the Shahparir Dwip points.
"The process to send back the remaining detainees is underway," he added.
Many of the Rohingyas, an ethnic minority in predominantly Buddhist Myanmar, tried to flee to neighbouring Bangladesh in search of medical aid, food and shelter after a sectarian violence broke out between Rohingya Muslims and ethnic Rakhine Buddhists in Myanmar state of Rakhine in early June.
Bangladesh government says that its resources are already overly strained and has refused to accept the Rohingyas despite appeals from the United Nations to grant them refugee status.
Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in a recent interview with Qatar-based Al Jazeera said already around 300,000 Rohingyas living in refugee camps in Bangladesh
