16 more Rohingyas detained

Bangladesh border guards have detained 16 more Rohingyas who had intruded into Bangladesh territory in Teknaf at different times between Wednesday night and yesterday morning.

The detainees include two Rohingya women and four children. They have been kept in BGB custody and provided with food.
“Seven refugees have been detained from Najirpara of Teknaf at about 10:00 pm on Wednesday. They had set off from Maungdaw in Myanmar on their boats and reached Najirpara crossing the Naf River at its narrowest point,” Lt Col Zahid Hasan, commanding officer of BGB 42 Battalion, said.

BGB men also detained nine other Rohingyas from Naitongpara and Zadimora areas of Teknaf, he said.

The process of sending the 16 refugees back to Myanmar could not be initiated due to the inclement weather, the BGB commanding officer said.

The influx of refugees had been taking place mostly through Najirpara point where the river has become narrow, he said adding that the refugees also chose this point due to availability of public transport.

The BGB and coastguard have already strengthened their vigilance at this point, he added.

Meanwhile, 18 other Rohingya refugees, who had been detained earlier from different areas in Teknaf, could not be sent back due to heavy rain and rough river.
