DHAKA:
Foreign Minister Dr Dipu Moni Saturday placed the Rohingya refugee
problem in Bangladesh before the OIC conference with a view to
resolving the issue.
The
minister placed the issue while addressing the international
ministerial conference on ‘Refugees in the Muslim World’ at
Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.
The
conference--jointly organized by the OIC and the Office of the UN
High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR)--is the first
ministerial-level meeting to deal specifically with the issue of
refugees in the Muslim world.
Dipu
Moni Friday reached Ashgabat to attend the two-day conference.
In
her speech, Dipu Moni described the overall situation of entrance of
Myanmar citizens to Bangladesh.
She
also informed the OIC ministers about the negative social impacts of
Rohingya problems in Bangladesh.
Dr
Dipu Moni added: “Bangladesh does not belong to any side as per the
convention on refugees in 1951 and the protocol of 1967.”
The
minister also emphasized on organizing international dialogue on
refugee problem with non-OIC countries.
Several
Muslim countries have not ratified the 1951 UN Refugee Convention and
its 1967 Protocol.
High
Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres urged those OIC countries
that have not already done so to accede to the 1951 UN Refugee
Convention, which forms the legal foundation on which UNHCR’s work
is based, and its 1967 Protocol.
Dipu
Moni is expected to return home on Monday.
