Dipu Moni seeks UNHCR’s help for repatriation of Rohingya refugees

Dhaka, May 13 (UNB) - Foreign Minister Dipu Moni Sunday sought cooperation of the UNHCR for resumption of the repatriation process of the Myanmar refugees in Bangladesh.

Dipu Moni discussed the issue during a meeting with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees António Guterres on the sidelines of the OIC Ministerial meeting at Ashgabat, the capital of Turkmenistan.

A release of the Foreign Ministry said Guterres opined that there might be some differences in understanding between the UNHCR and the concerned governments about different aspects of this refugee problem.

He suggested that the Bangladesh may consider sending a team to Geneva or UNHCR may send a team to Dhaka.

Dipu Moni preferred the second option and requested the UNHCR chief to adequately sensitize the UNHCR Dhaka office for taking necessary measures to resume the repatriation process that has been stalled since 2005.

Later, the Foreign Minister had a bilateral meeting with the leader of the Qatari delegation.

The Qatari side reconfirmed that their Deputy Prime Minister would be visiting Bangladesh on May 27.  Qatar also expressed its interest for investment in Bangladesh.
