Chiang Mai (Mizzima) – President Thein Sein and Vice President Sai Mauk Kham will take charge of the Burmese government’s efforts to achieve peace with ethnic armed forces.
Thein Sein will serve as chairman of a union peace committee and Sai Mauk Kham will serve as chairman of the working committee.
San Aung, a government peace facilitator, said the 12-member union committee would include Lower House Speaker Shwe Mann and various ministers and other officials.
A second 52-member working committee includes chief ministers of states and regions and regional military commanders in Kachin and Shan state.
A leading member of the government’s former peace team, Aung Thaung, was not included in the reorganized peace team. The former members of the government’s negotiating team reached cease-fire or peace agreements with 11 ethnic armed forces, but failed to achieve an agreement with the Kachin Independence Organization, which recently said it no longer trusted the government.
Meanwhile, Chin National Front (CNF) joint General-Secretary Salai Sui Khar led a peace delegation that met with union Minister Aung Min on Monday in Hakha, where a 16-point cease-fire agreement was finalized.
Government delegate Hla Maung Shwe told Mizzima the agreement included territory demarcations, the locations of liaison offices, the return of Chin nationals from foreign countries and development projects.
