Collecting income taxes, but no receipt in Maungdaw

Maungdaw, Arakan State: The income tax office of Maungdaw Township is collecting income taxes from businessmen (retail and whole sale shopkeepers) but the office didn’t issue any receipts to the businessmen, said a businessmen who denied mentioning his name from Maungdaw.


U Thein Chey, the assistant township income tax officer, issued the ordered to the businessmen to pay the taxes to the office immediately, otherwise he will find more, the businessman said.



U Thein Chey is collecting taxes from Mungdaw businessmen (especially Rohingya community) 60,000 kyat to 30,000 kyat per shop depend on the financial condition, said an officer from income tax office.


“The officer collected taxes from Rohingya community, but, no receipts were issued about the taxes. If someone asked for receipt, the officer said that we had already issued the receipt.” 


“The income tax office only issued summoned letters to the people with the ordered of U Thein Chey and there is no other paper issued to the people.”


There are more than 2000 shops (In markets and under the public building) and the office collected huge money and how much the office submit to the revenues office, said a politician from Maungdaw.


Recently, the officer also called again to the building owner who rented their ground floor for business and asking to pay taxes for business. The building owners had paid their taxes of building to the office regularly. How the building owners pay again the taxes for building, the politician said.


“The income tax officer wants double taxes from building owners showing the building are using in the business.”

American Buddhists Promote 969 Movement With Website

Irrawaddy News: July 9, 2013 A group of American Buddhists has launched an English-language website promoting the 969 movement, in response to negative media surrounding the ultra-nationalist Buddhist campaign in Burma. The website aims to dispel “myths” about the movement, with a letter from nationalist monk Wirathu to a Time magazine reporter whose article about 969 was banned in Burma.  “We’re not officially endorsed by Ven Wirathu at this time but will send a delegation to his monastery soon,” a spokesperson for the site said via email, adding that the group would create a nonprofit to coordinate “969 activities worldwide in response to religious oppression.”

Rohingya Activist Nominated for Human Rights Award

Zaw Min Htut has been working for Rohingyas’ rights through the Burmese Rohingya Association of Japan since he fled Burma in 1998. Prior to that he was a student activist in Burma, and was detained for his participation in protests in 1996. In Japan, Zaw Min Htut has organized protests at the Burmese embassy and has written books on the history of Rohingya.
