Teknaf, Bangladesh: No troops built up along the Burma-Bangladesh border in Arakan State after maritime verdict announced by the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea ( ITLOS) on March 14, said Burma’s border security force (Nasaka) official from Maungdaw.The statement came out after Lt Col Zahid Hassan alleged that Burma had been mobilizing troops at different points along the border, including Tumbro, Boliabazar and Maungdaw at a flag meeting where the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) and Burma border security force (Nasaka) held on March 17 for border issues, the Nasaka official said.
9-BGB personnel participated in the meeting, led by Lt. Col. Zahid Hassan of Teknaf Battalion No. 42 while seven Nasaka personnel led by U Myint Theing, the deputy director of Nasaka area No. 6 of Maungdaw Township.
“Lt Col Zahid Hassan said that Bangladesh is going to maintain relationship with Burma and interest of the country more than any time.”
The Nasaka personnel thanked to the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) which had delivered its judgment over the dispute regarding delimitation of the maritime boundary between Bangladesh and Burma in the Bay of Bengal in favor of Bangladesh on March 14, the Lt. Col said.
According to sources of inside Arakan, some Burmese troops were deployed in north of Maungdaw town on account of Western Command Commander’s trip.
U Myint Theing also said the lingering misunderstanding between the border forces of the two countries will end once the maritime boundary is demarcated. “The judgment would help us work better,” he added.
However, the BGB delegation returned to Teknaf around noon.
