CARLOW RUGBY Club has been shortlisted for the Diverse Ireland Awards 2011.
Seamus O'leary, Participatory Projects Officer for Southeast with The Integration Centre said 'County Carlow Football Club, also known as the Carlow Rugby Club, has worked closely with members of Carlow Interagency Integration Forum, sub group of the Carlow County Development Board and the Rohingya Community in Carlow to reestablish the Cricket Club as a way of both recognizing the interests of Carlow's newest residents and of using sport to promote integration. It is thoroughly deserves to be shortlisted for the Diverse Ireland Awards 2011.'
'Along with the County Carlow Football Club the project involves the collaboration of St. Catherine's Community Services Centre, Co. Carlow Local Sports Partnership, Carlow Regional Youth Services, Carlow Local Authorities and community members in Carlow. One of the earliest cricket clubs in Ireland was based in the current rugby club but it has taken the involvement of the newly arrived members of the Rohingya Community to re-invigorate the sport and show how sporting organizations can play a positive role in wider integration processes.'
The Integration Centre's Diverse Ireland Awards have been created to raise awareness of the positive advancements around immigrant integration in Ireland.
These awards have been established to help people learn more about the important work being done and to honour the efforts of those who are creating stronger, more unified and successful communities.
The categories are Politician, Local Authority, School, Journalist, Individual, Support Service, Sporting Organisation, The Arts/cultural Organisation, Large Company, and SME Business
The event which is being judged by former Minister for Justice Nora Owen, Economist Jim Power, and Newstalk Presenter Dil Wickremasinghe will take place in the Mercantile hotel tomorrow ( Wednesday).
