Suu Kyi meets Burmese refugees in Thailand

Democracy champion Aung San Suu Kyi has arrived in northern Thailand to visit Burmese refugees who have been in camps along the border for decades. Thousands of Burmese ethnic minority people, many of them dressed in traditional costume, gathered at Mae La camp, 50 kilometres north of Mae Sot, to greet Suu Kyi on Saturday.

ILO to ease criticisms on Burma forced labour

A Rohingya child rests by the window in Sittwe (Reuters) The International Labour Organization (ILO) is likely to ease its criticisms against Burma on forced labour, despite fresh reports that the military continues to target the stateless Rohingya population in Northern Arakan state with impunity.

Rohingya forced labour widespread in north Arakan: report

Forced labour continues to be widely and systematically practiced in northern Arakan State in Burma and little has changed for the Rohingya population, said a report by the Arakan Project titled  “Forced Labour Still Prevails: Overview of forced labour practices in North Arakan”  released on Friday.

BURMA opposition leader  Aung San Suu Kyi  has left the country for the first time in 24 years. Previously the pro-democracy campaigner was either under house arrest or too fearful that if she left  Burma , the government would never let her return.

Rohingya refugee dies on the way to the hospital

A Rohingya refugee from Nayapara camp died on the way to Cox’s Bazar government hospital on May 27. One camp resident, who spoke on condition of anonymity, claimed the deceased man, who has been identified as Moggul Hussain, was not getting adequate treatment at the camp. “He visited the camp clinic frequently for treatment but the medical team leader neglected his medical condition.”
