Buthidaung, Arakan state- A Rakhine administrator of a Rohingya village called Pha-yung-Chaung in Buthidaung Township supported by Police Chief Myay Htwe is abusing his authority and arbitrarily extorting money from Rohingyas in the village.
“There is a Rohingya village called Pha-yung-chaung in Buthidaung Township, Arakan state. Administrator of the village is a Rakhine (Magh) extremist named Maung Than Htay. He arbitrarily squeezes money from Rohingyas of the village allegedly abiding by an instruction by Police Chief of Buthidaung, Myat Htway.
He frequently uses his puppet, Salim (son of) Iman Hussein, to collect the money. Fearing the persecution by the police officer, Rohingyas have to pay the administrator the money he demands”
“Till date, the administrator has extorted money from the following people on the dates mentioned.
1) Mohammed Sayed (son of) Kalimullah (Age 40), Kyat 150,000 on 5th April 2014
2) Siddique (son of) Hussein Johar (Age 30), Kyat 20,000 on 17th April 2014
3) Abu Siddique (son of) Aji Rahman (age 50), Kyat 50,000 on 17th April 2014
4) Abul Baser (son of) Rahman (Age 3), Kyat 2,000 on 19th April 2014” said a Rohingya in the village.
He continued saying “the administrator sent his man to squeeze money from Abul Baser as he (Abul Baser) was preparing for his daughter’s marriage. The administrator threatened him to prosecute under section 144 (i.e. not abiding by curfew order) if he failed to give him (the administrator) Kyat 50,000.
