Iran to send relief aid to Myanmar Muslims: IRCS official

An official with the Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) says a consignment of relief aid weighing 30 tons will be soon sent to Rohingya Muslims in Myanmar.

The director of IRCS Public Relations Department Pouya Hajian said the relief load includes 15 tons of foodstuff and 15 tons of other relief items. 

Myanmar's Rohingya Muslims have been facing torture, neglect and repression in the Buddhist-majority land, since it achieved independence in 1948.

Buddhist extremists frequently attack Rohingyas and set fire to their homes in several villages. 

The government of Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas, who it claims are not natives and classifies them as illegal immigrants. 

This comes as the Rohingya people are said to be Muslim descendants of Persian, Turkish, Bengali, and Pathan origin, who migrated to Myanmar as early as the 8th century. 

The UN has considered the Rohingyas among the most persecuted minorities on earth.
