Kaladan News
Ukhiya, Bangladesh: Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) is giving polio with albendazole tablets to the children in the Kutupalong makeshift camp from today February 11 , said a refugee from the camp.
“Polio is given under 5 year children and albendazole tablets are given Children from 2- 5 year only.”
The refugee children will safe after receiving polio and albendazole as per yearly campaign of Bangladesh government, according to a doctor from Chittagong who works in the Child department in government hospital.
According to a doctor, most children should get the polio vaccine if authority has plan to run the program with The United Nations Children's Fund -UNICEF. Children should be vaccinated with four doses of inactivated polio vaccine (IPV) at the following ages such as a dose at 2 months, 4 months, 6-18 months and a booster dose at 4-6 years.
The polio feeding to the children in northern Arakan is very real, sometime the children get but not yearly, said an health worker from Maungdaw.
Polio has received the oral polio vaccine (OPV), which was made from a live poliovirus. Although the live virus vaccine was highly effective at protecting against polio, a few cases of polio per year were caused by the oral vaccine itself.
Besides, tropical diseases -- chicken pox, pneumonia and measles-- have spread inside Kutuplong makeshift (unregistered camp) recently. Many refugee children including some woman have been suffering from chicken pox and measles since middle of January 2012. The affected children are taken to the clinic of Medicins Sans Frontieres (MSF) where doctor provided medicine to refugees, said a refugee elder from the Kutupalong makeshift camp.
