(Photo: virathu.com) By Lawi Weng The Irrawaddy March 17, 2014 RANGOON — Nationalist Buddhist monk U Wirathu visited strife-torn Arakan State and joined large protests against the upcoming census over the weekend. Local Arakanese Buddhists oppose the census because it will allow the stateless Rohingya minority to register their ethnic identity as they wish. On Sunday, protests against the UN-supported census where held in nine townships in Arakan State. U Wirathu, who heads the controversial 969 movement, which is accused of spreading hate speech against Muslims, told The Irrawaddy he participated in order to voice support for the protests. “I joined the protest in Myebon [Township] and encouraged protesters because there is no such Rohingya name in our country,” he claimed. “But they are trying to create and have this this name—it is not fair.” Arakanese politicians and many ...

Rohingyas in apartheid Burma

Displaced Muslims wait outside a humanitarian centre for aid at a camp on the outskirt of Sittwe, Rakhine state, western Myanmar on February 26. (Photo: AFP/Soe Than Win) By  CR Abrar New Age BD March 16, 2014 IF PRESS reports are anything to go by, then it may be reasonably construed that the recent efforts of the Bangladesh prime minister to engage the Burmese authorities on Rohingya refugees in this country have fallen on deaf ears. The Burmese reaction has been consistent with the regime’s general approach to the Rohingya issue.  There has been little change in the overall situation in the Arakan state. The communities remain largely segregated, the internally displaced Rohingyas are housed in atrocious camp conditions with a plethora of restrictions on movement of people and goods in and out of such camps, anti-Muslim feelings are rife with Buddhist monks whipping up such sentiments, the administrative and judicial structures of the state do not even ...

WIRATHU: The Psychopath

By Haikal Mansor The Stateless March 15, 2014 We all know what types of names he is entitled to, what types of activities he performs or generates, what types of people are behind him and what type of personality disorder he has. Here is a poster I tried to describe the criteria that are met to consider him as "a dangerous Psychopath" from Psychiatric point of view. "The Hare Psychopathy Checklist Revised (PCL-R) is a commonly used diagnostic tool designed to access a person’s degree of Psychopathy that explicitly entails persistent and serious criminal behaviour. With the score of more than 25 is considered as 'psychopathy or psychopath'. In the case of Wirathu, he has a score of 28 putting him under the category of "Dangerous and Severe Personality Disorder". Followings are the criteria met in PCL-R: 1. Glib and Superficial charm - Soft spoken and charming face 2. Grandiose (exaggeratedly high) estimation of self - regards himself as...

Abuses against Rohingya ‘may constitute crimes against humanity’ says United Nations Rapporteur

By Burma Campaign UK March 14, 2014 Burma Campaign UK today welcomed the latest report by the United Nations Special Rapporteur on human rights in Burma. The Rapporteur concluded that: “The pattern of widespread and systematic human rights violations in Rakhine State may constitute crimes against humanity as defined under the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court.” He went on to state that: “During his latest visit to Rakhine State, the Special Rapporteur saw no improvements in the human rights situation. Instead, as time passes without clear action at the State and Union level to address the widespread discrimination and human rights violations occurring there, the situation continues to worsen from an already dire state.” The Special Rapporteur also backed calls made by Burma Campaign UK, the European Burma Network and many other human rights organisations for an international investigation the massacre at Du Chee Yar Tan in January. Burma's Ethnic Persecution is State Policy

Official abuse threatens both the Rohingya Muslims and the country's opening to the West. By Matthew Smith WSJ March 14, 2014 Rangoon Burma has enjoyed a remarkable several years of economic and political opening, but it is now also suffering a far darker development—serious ethnic violence. Coordinated arson attacks and periodic massacres in the remote Rakhine State have flattened entire villages and left hundreds of Rohingya men, women and children dead since June 2012. More than 140,000 are relegated to miserable displacement camps and tens of thousands have fled by sea. Western governments have spent the past two years trying to reconcile a brimming optimism about political reforms with harsh realities on the ground. Can the central government in Naypyidaw really be blamed for unrest in far-flung Rakhine State? The latest developments suggest the answer is yes and paint a dark picture of state-sponsored persecution. My organization, Fortify Rights, ...
